After a century of anticipation, the new Latonia Branch of the Kenton County Public Library is now open. The facility, located at 3911 Winston Ave in the Latonia Commerce Center, replaces the original book station that was housed in Pope’s Drugstore around 1910.
The 11,500 square foot building features an art-deco design and offers various amenities. It holds 15,000 items including popular books and a children's collection. There are independent sections for teens and adults, an interactive play area for children, a meeting room with a capacity of 50 people, two small study rooms, desktop computers with printing services, and large-format printing. Unique elements include a fireplace, reading nook, an "old-tech" interactive area with typewriters and vintage cameras, as well as comfortable seating equipped with charging stations.
The library's programming includes activities such as yoga, meditation, storytimes, gardening workshops, cardboard engineering classes, ESL classes and more. Special events like visits from Newport Aquarium penguins and Madcap Puppet Shows are also planned.
The grand opening on June 10 was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local dignitaries including Covington’s Mayor and Kenton County Judge/Executive. Library board members and Executive Director Dave Schroeder were present as well. Over 1600 community members visited on opening day with 870 items checked out.
“The outpouring of support from the community has been nothing short of incredible," stated Dave Schroeder. "Seeing so many people walk through the doors on opening day affirmed just how much this branch means to Latonia. I’m also deeply grateful to our staff whose dedication, creativity and hard work made this vision a reality. This branch is a testament to what can happen when a community comes together around the power of learning, connection and access.”
The branch operates Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 9 am to 6 pm; Tuesday and Thursday from 9 am to 8 pm; Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. It is accessible by bus or can be reached by walking or biking.
