Shawna Harney, the Chief Academic Officer for the Kenton County School District, received the Mary Ann Mongan Literacy Award in Villa Hills, Kentucky. The award recognizes her contributions to literacy and education over her 27-year career in the district.

The Mary Ann Mongan Literacy Award was established in 2009 to honor individuals dedicated to literacy in Kenton County. It is named after Mary Ann Mongan, the first Executive Director of the Kenton County Public Library. Harney's work aligns with Mongan's values through initiatives like the Read to Succeed Act and Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS).

Dave Schroeder, Executive Director of the Kenton County Public Library, stated, “I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award than Shawna. Her tireless work has transformed the educational landscape in Kenton County. Shawna’s commitment to student literacy, safety, and overall academic excellence has made a profound impact on the lives of countless children, educators, and families. She embodies the spirit of the Mary Ann Mongan Literacy Award and continues to inspire us all.”

Under Harney's leadership, there has been significant growth in student literacy within the district due to initiatives such as Kentucky’s Read to Succeed Act. She has also focused on improving special education services and fostering professional development for educators.

Harney played a key role in developing MTSS, which addresses students' diverse academic and behavioral needs. Her efforts with the Community-Based Accountability System have encouraged collaboration among educators, students, parents, and community members.

The award presentation occurred on Friday at River Ridge Elementary School within the Kenton County Independent School District.
