Shawna Harney, Chief Academic Officer for the Kenton County School District, received the Mary Ann Mongan Literacy Award in recognition of her significant contributions to literacy and educational excellence. The award ceremony emphasized Harney's 27 years of service to the district and her dedication to enhancing student outcomes.

"I am honored to win this award," stated Harney.

The Mary Ann Mongan Literacy Award was established in 2009 to honor individuals who demonstrate outstanding dedication to literacy in Kenton County. It is named after Mary Ann Mongan, the first Executive Director of the Kenton County Public Library. The award celebrates Mongan's legacy in education and literacy. Harney’s leadership in implementing literacy initiatives such as the Read to Succeed Act and the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) reflects the values that Mongan promoted.

"I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award than Shawna," said Dave Schroeder, Executive Director of the Kenton County Public Library. "Her tireless work has transformed the educational landscape in Kenton County. Shawna’s commitment to student literacy, safety, and overall academic excellence has made a profound impact on the lives of countless children, educators, and families. She embodies the spirit of the Mary Ann Mongan Literacy Award and continues to inspire us all."

Under Harney’s leadership, there has been significant growth in student literacy within the district, particularly through Kentucky’s Read to Succeed Act aimed at ensuring students read at grade level. She also led initiatives for improving special education services and behavioral support while promoting professional development opportunities for educators.

Harney played a key role in developing MTSS, a framework addressing diverse academic and behavioral needs among students by providing individualized support necessary for success. Additionally, her involvement with the district’s Community-Based Accountability System brought together various stakeholders like educators, students, parents, and community members for collaborative assessment of student progress.

The award presentation occurred on Friday, November 15 at River Ridge Elementary School within Kenton County Independent School District.
